Celebrex, marketed as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is one of the most commonly prescribed medications globally. The drug, a generic version of Celebrex, is also used to treat a number of chronic conditions, including arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer. This article discusses the most common side effects and warnings associated with the drug.
Celebrex is generally well tolerated. However, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal issues, such as abdominal cramping, diarrhea, or an upset stomach. Less commonly, the drug can cause serious kidney problems and bleeding from the kidneys. Patients taking Celebrex must discuss these potential side effects with their healthcare provider before starting the medication.
Drug interactions are a serious concern for many people taking Celebrex. These substances can include certain medications that can cause serious side effects. The risks and benefits of taking Celebrex can vary depending on the individual and the type of drug taken. In some cases, the drug may interact with other medications.

CINCINNATI (WBBH) -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration will begin a review of the drug celecoxib, the first approved by the FDA to treat arthritis pain in adults and adolescents aged 12 and above, Monday.
The review, which will be held at the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Pain Research and Management, will consider a broad range of drugs that include naproxen, an anti-inflammatory, arthritis pain reliever, a COX-2 inhibitor, and the anti-inflammatory anti-arthritis drug diclofenac, or celecoxib, which was first approved by the FDA in 1999.
The agency's review was based on a joint venture between the drug maker and the Food and Drug Administration, which has been under review since 2005.
"It's been a very, very challenging process," said Steven Lechleiter, director of the Center for Pain Research and Management, which has been working on the FDA review.
"We're continuing to do our best to get the review through the Committee on Safety and Effects of Drugs," he said.
The review is expected to take the form of a detailed, comprehensive drug review, which will be reviewed in about 20 minutes or more, Lechleiter said.
"We're very optimistic about the review," Lechleiter said. "We're very confident that there's a lot of room for improvement in this review process."
The review will begin at the Cleveland Clinic's Research Institute in the spring, and will include a review of the drug's use in patients, including a review of the potential side effects of celecoxib and its use in the management of arthritis pain.
The drug's side effects range from mild to moderate, Lechleiter said. "We are really excited to begin the review and to have the drug under review as soon as possible."
The drug has been studied as a potential long-term treatment for arthritis pain. It was approved by the FDA in 1999 for the treatment of osteoarthritis, a common form of arthritis that causes pain and stiffness.
The drug has also been studied for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In 2006, a randomized trial of Celebrex, another arthritis pain reliever, was halted due to a rare but severe form of rheumatoid arthritis.
The drug was approved by the FDA in 2002 for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.
The drug's use has been studied as a possible long-term treatment for osteoarthritis. However, the drug was stopped in 2004 after a study showed that patients taking an oral medication for osteoarthritis had an increased risk of developing heart attack and stroke, even though they were also taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
The drug is also being studied for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, or arthritis where inflammation is the primary cause of the pain.
